T-shirt design deadline looming and how to access e-books
We’re ooking for creative help in designing a t-shirt for this year’s Summer Reading Program, with February 18 the deadline for submissions. The theme is “oceans of possibilities.”
Pick up a flyer at the library or go online to our website at https://pagosalibrary.org for details. The winner will receive a free t-shirt with their design. The winning t-shirt will be worn by staff during the Summer Reading Program and a limited number will be available for purchase. This contest is open to all ages.
How to access e-books
CloudLibrary allows you to download e-books to read or listen to audio books on your PC or mobile device. Bring your phone, tablet or laptop and join us on Tuesday, February 1 from 1-2 p.m. at the library and we will help you get started. This unique collection gives you access to more than 8,000 titles.
Teen book club next Wednesday
We invite sixth-12th graders to join the free in-person teen book club next Wednesday, February 2 from 4-5 p.m. for a lively discussion of what you’ve been reading and to help us plan what we’ll read next month.
Searching for teen volunteers
If you enjoy books, learning new skills and helping your community, we invite teens aged 12-19 to volunteer at your library. You’ll have the opportunity to write book reviews, make artwork for the teen area, help plan new programs, judge our contests, help with Storytime, prepare crafts for kids’ programs and more. Dungeons & Dragons
Join us Tuesday, February 1 from 4-6 p.m. for our ongoing Dungeons & Dragons game free for teens and young adults on Google Meet every other Tuesday. Contact claire@pagosalibrary.org to learn how to join.
S.T.E.A.M enrichment kits
Participants in this free enrichment program for youngsters aged five and up receive a kit guiding you through science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (S.T.E.A.M.) projects. The kits are available all month but registration is required by calling your library at 970-264-2209.
Writing challenge
A new all-ages writing challenge was posted January 24 on the library’s Facebook page. We hope you will challenge your creativity by participating in this free all-ages activity.
Family storytimes
Wednesdays from 10-11 a.m. join us for free in-person children’s stories, games and plenty of reasons to get up and move. As well, Discovery Time is coming back twice a month. You will find it on Facebook at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, February 5. It will remain virtual for the time being.
Tech Time
Free in-person slots are available from 10 a.m.-noon Tuesdays and 2-4 p.m. Thursdays. Brad will help you resolve issues with your computer, smartphone, tablet and other electronic devices.
ESL classes
There will be no ESL classes in February, but we hope to resume the free in-person evening classes as soon as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Adult education
Our free PALS (Pagosa Adult Learning Services) session take place on Thursdays from 5:30-8 p.m. when Mark helps with high school equivalency, GED, college prep, financial aid, tutoring and more.
In-person gaming
Enjoy free all-ages video gaming on the X-box 360 Kinect on Fridays from 2:30 – 3:45 p.m.
Library hours
Most of our programs are happening in person. Also, our hours have returned to pre-COVID levels – and even more on weekdays:
- Monday, Wednesday and Friday open 9 a.m. – 6 p.m.
- Tuesdays and Thursdays open 9 a.m. – 8 p.m.
- Saturdays open 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
For those uncomfortable coming into the building, curbside service continues. Phone 264-2209 when you are in the parking lot so staff can bring the items out for you. If you put a hold on something, please wait for your usual alert (email, phone call or text) before coming to pick it up.

To be sure you don’t miss any of the free library activities available to you and your family, we encourage you to pick up a copy of the events calendar each month. There are three versions – children, teens and adults.
Mysteries and thrillers
Nine mysteries by Jeff Carson featuring Colorado detective David Wolf have been added to the collection: “Foreign Deceit,” “Dire,” “In the Ground,” “The Silversmith,” “Alive and Killing,” “Deadly Conditions,” “Cold Lake,” “Smoked Out” and “To The Bone.” The author, a resident of Colorado, generally sets his stories in the high country of Colorado and the mountain west. As well, we have “Sea Hawke” by Ted Bell, an Alex Hawke adventure, and “Mercy” by David Baldacci, an Atlee Pine thriller. “Something to Hide” by Elizabeth George features Det. Insp. Thomas Lynley and Set. Sgt. Barbara Havers.
Other novels
“Invisible” by Danielle Steel features a gifted young woman who grew up in an isolated family environment. “Anthem” by Noah Hawley is a dark story about children trying to cope in today’s dangerous and dysfunctional world. “The Starless Crown” by James Rollins features dangerous creatures and plants in this first book in the new Moon Fall sci-fi fantasy series.
DVDs
“Ron’s Gone Wrong” is a family film featuring a socially awkward middle-schooler. “The Nevers” is a sci-fi epic set in 1896 Victorian London.
Books on CD
“Rise” by Lindsey Vonn is a memoir by the three-time Olympic medal-winning alpine ski racer for the U.S. Ski Team who is generally considered the best female skier of all time.
Nonfiction
“How to Manage an Effective Nonprofit Organization” by Michael A. Sand is a guide to writing and managing grants, fundraising, board development and strategic planning. “The American Indian Secrets of Crystal Healing” by Luc Bourgault records the secrets and teachings of the Cherokee and Apache tribes with the support of Tribal Elders to correct false information and bad practices. “The Long Slide” by Tucker Carlson is a look at magazine journalism in the days when they played a significant role in American life. “Going Higher” by Charles Houston, David E. Harris and Ellen J. Zeman is an updated guide to hypoxia at high altitude and everyday life.
Downloadable e-books and audiobooks
We have a wide variety of downloadable e-books and audio books for all ages – children, tweens, teens and adults – in cloudLibrary. The items in cloudLibrary are purchased separately from physical items, so the books available are different – and it continues to use the consortium’s contributions as well as those that we bought.
