Friends book sale in new location and Creede Theatre show today
Planning already is underway for the Friends of the Library annual book sale, one of the highlights of the summer for locals and visitors alike.
This year’s book sale will open on Thursday evening, June 23 at 6 p.m. for members (memberships are available at the door), and then open to the public on Friday and Saturday June 24-25. It will be in a new location – in the Fellowship Hall at the United Methodist Church in downtown Pagosa. And it’s a new time of year as well, moving to June to avoid the month of August which is so busy with community events including the Archuleta County Fair.
The Friends book sale is an ideal venue for finding treasures for yourself and gifts for family and friends. You’ll find lots more than books to buy at great bargain prices – there are audio books, DVDs, puzzles and games as well. While you enjoy these treats, you’ll be contributing to the health of your library.
Every year the proceeds from the book sale are gratefully received by your library to ensure ongoing excellence of our collection, our facilities and our service to you. Last year in two and a half days, the Friends’ book sale raised more than $2,000.
The Friends always need help sorting, boxing and preparing for the sale. As well, year-round our volunteers go to the library to sort through donations to find the ones appropriate for the annual sale. Free tax forms
Tax forms are available free at your library while supplies last.
Creede Theatre show today
Children ages five and under are invited to a special free performance of “Ms. Joy” at your library today, Thursday, March 3, from 10-11 a.m. put on by Creede Repertory Theatre, rescheduled by the theatre from February 16.
“Ms. Joy” is about a woman who has a very strict daily routine — until one day she receives a visit from an unexpected dog who turns her routine upside down. The story is told through clowning, puppetry and sound. It teaches children the power of play, friendship and laughter.
Adult book club next Tuesday
Ruby’s Book Club meets in person from 2-3 p.m. on Tuesday, March 8 to discuss “Madhouse at the End of the Earth” by Julian Sancton. Copies are available for pickup at your library. This book club is held the second Tuesday of each month, alternating between fiction and nonfiction titles.
Teen gaming
Free teen gaming happens on Tuesday, March 9 from 4–5:30 p.m. for teens in the 6th-12th grades. Enjoy X-box 360 Kinect, Wii and snacks.
Dungeons & Dragons
Join us every other Tuesday from 4-6 p.m. for our in-person Dungeons & Dragons game free for teens and young adults. The next one is Tuesday, March 8.
S.T.E.A.M enrichment kits
Participants in this free enrichment program for youngsters aged five and up receive a kit guiding you through science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (S.T.E.A.M.) projects. The kits are available all month but registration is required by calling your library at 970-264-2209.
Family storytimes
Wednesdays from 10-11 a.m. join us for free in-person children’s stories, games and plenty of reasons to get up and move. Special guests Lisa Baker and her friend Fluffy Dog will provide puppets and storytelling on March 9. The next Discovery Time takes place Saturday, March 5 on Facebook at 2:30 p.m.
ESL classes
Free in-person evening classes take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays with 4-5 p.m. reserved for beginners and 5-7 p.m. for both intermediate and advanced students. Please help us spread the word about these classes to others in our community who would be interested, and contact us by phone or email if you have any questions.

Tech Time
Free in-person slots are available from 10 a.m.-noon Tuesdays and 2-4 p.m. Thursdays. Brad will help you resolve issues with your computer, smartphone, tablet and other electronic devices.
Adult education
Our free PALS (Pagosa Adult Learning Services) session take place on Thursdays from 5:30-8 p.m. when Mark helps with high school equivalency, GED, college prep, financial aid, tutoring and more.
In-person gaming
Enjoy free all-ages video gaming on the X-box 360 Kinect on Fridays from 2:30 – 3:45 p.m.
Writing challenge
A new all-ages writing challenge was posted February 28 on the library’s Facebook page. We hope you will challenge your creativity by participating in this free all-ages activity.
Library hours
Most of our programs are happening in person. Also, our hours have returned to pre-COVID levels – and even more on weekdays:
- Monday, Wednesday and Friday open 9 a.m. – 6 p.m.
- Tuesdays and Thursdays open 9 a.m. – 8 p.m.
- Saturdays open 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
As well, curbside service continues. Phone 264-2209 when you are in the parking lot so staff can bring the items out for you. If you put a hold on something, please wait for your usual alert (email, phone call or text) before coming to pick it up.

“A Trail of Lies” by Kylie Logan is book three of the4 Jazz Ramsey mystery series. “A Good Day for Chardonnay” by Darynda Jones is book two of the Sunshine Vicram mystery series. “Reckless Girls” by Rachel Hawkins is a mystery set on an exotic island. “Savage Sunday” by William W. and J.A. Johnstone is a Duff MacCallister western. “Librarians of the West” edited by Hazel Rumney contains four westerns by award-winning authors.
DVDs
“King Richard” starring Will Smith is based on the true story of Venus and Serena Williams. “The Cannabis Question” is a NOVA documentary about the medical risks and benefits of marijuana. “This is Us” is the complete fourth season.
Nonfiction
“Lift Your Voice” by Angela Harrelson, George Floyd’s aunt, is a story of hope. “Born of Lakes and Plains” by Pulitzer Prize finalist Anne F. Hyde is a history of five mixed-descent families who played pivotal roles in American history.
Mysteries and thrillers
“The Accomplice” by Lisa Lutz features two long-time best friends who find themselves involved in a murder. “All That is Secret” by Patricia Raybon tells of a Black theologian called home to Denver to solve her estranged father’s murder. “The Good Son” by Jacquelyn Mitchard focuses on the aftermath of a crime in a close-knit community. We have four more books in the David Wolf thriller series by Colorado author Jeff Carson – “Dark Mountain,” “Rain,” “Drifted,” and “Divided Sky.” “The Magnolia Palace” by Fiona Davis is set in the Frick Museum in New York City.

“Mickey 7” by Edward Ashton is a sci-fi story.

“Lightning in a Mirror” by Jayne Ann Krentz is the final installment of the chilling Fogg Lake trilogy. “Something to Hide” by Elizabeth George is a mystery featuring Det. Insp. Parker’s Bye Bye Baby” by Ace Atkins is a Spenser mystery. “Eat Like a Human” by Dr. Bill Schindler contains 75 recipes to achieve optimum health and vitality.
Downloadable e-books and audiobooks
We have a wide variety of downloadable e-books and audio books for all ages – children, tweens, teens and adults – in cloudLibrary. The items in cloudLibrary are purchased separately from physical items, so the books available are different – and it continues to use the consortium’s contributions as well as those that we bought.
